Wonder what hypoglycemia is? It is a condition brought by a rather low blood sugar level in the body. If you have diabetes, then you know very well the effect of lack of blood sugar. Since it is the one that supplies the body with energy, low level of it can make a person feel very ill. So, if yo

u have a close family member who experiences this condition, you might ask this question, “What am I to do when hypoglycemia strikes?”

But first, you have to know the signs when a person is actually experiencing hypoglycemia? Does he feel extremely hungry and dizzy? Does he have a headache or nausea? Is his body sweating, shaking, and feeling colder than usual? Or how about blurred vision, slurred speech, and vomiting? If you notice all of these signs, then there’s no doubt hypoglycemia is striking.

If you are the one experiencing all those signs of hypoglycemia, the first thing to do is not to panic. Take note that lack of glucose in the body can be treated easily when detected early. So, what you must do is eat bards that are rich in sugar. Cookies and cakes, however, are a no-no. Although these bards are rich in sugar, these are not advised because these include protein and fat which are known to prevent the sugar from being absorbed quickly by the body. Next, you should drink a glass of juice or a cup of soda. This liquid will restore the balance of blood sugar in the body and make it function like normal again quickly.

It’s very easy indeed to treat hypoglycemia. But what if you or your close family member becomes unconscious after it strikes? Then it is time someone calls for an ambulance as severe hypoglycemia might lead to diabetic coma. If you happen to have a friend or family member under this state of unconsciousness, you will be trained how to administer glucagon shots to treat the hypoglycemic reaction. These injections are very important to regain the consciousness of the patient, and eventually normalize the blood sugar level.

Hypoglycemia leading to diabetic coma may result in more serious health conditions like brain damage. And who knows, it might lead to death. You sure don’t want this to happen to you or to your family. So, before worse come to worst, it is a must that you know what to do when hypoglycemia strikes.
