Movie Appraisal: Voyage Into Space – The Astonishing Japanese Masterpiece
Japanese monster movies have long been a favorite of movie goers around the world for many reasons. They are fascinating, they are creative, and often times they carry a strong moral message. “Voyage Into Space” is no different. If you love a movie that is thrilling and dramatically s
Our tale starts out with a underground government organization creating a massive android that will protect the earth against any and all unfamiliar invaders. The automaton is constructed to be controlled by a guiltless looking pocket watch that doubles as an advanced transmission device. The only caution is that the original person who communicates to the enormous robot using the wristwatch communication mechanism will be the one who it will forever be subservient too.
And the individual who speaks at the outset to the giant android is of course a juvenile, blameless boy. He is only playing when he first picks up the wristwatch, unintentionally of course, and speaks to the android. But envisage his wonder when the automaton obeys his every direct, and submissively protects the boy from all manner of harm that comes his way during this ambitious piece of film making.
At first, it would appear that the boy has discovered a loyal friend, proficient of shooting missiles from his fingertips, and picking the boy up and taking him on instant trips around the globe. But this, of course, can’t last very long as the world is rapidly invaded by unspeakable transformed aliens from the far reaches of space. This is when the true test of their comradeship is determined. Will the boy and his new found android buddy risk all to protect the earth? Will they even be triumphant?
At first it comes across as as if the automaton will be victorious and protect the earth from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading creature is made from a greatly unstable material, and if he is shot, the whole globe will be ruined. So shooting the alien dead is not an alternative for our commanding robot hero. He must react to the global threat with radical actions indeed.
And in a unhappy story of self sacrifice, the robot grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the pits of space, where he will pose no risk to the guiltless inhabitants of the globe. This, of course, leaves the young man without his companion, but he learns a priceless lesson. Sometimes you must go to profound sacrifices to save your associates, even to the point of sacrificing your own life. If you would like to watch a gripping show with a intense moral message, look no further than “Voyage Into Space.
