Five Classic Horror Movies Guaranteed To Make You Jump
There has always been something about a scary story that has excited its audience, no matter the medium. No matter if its horror movies, ghost stories, or chilling novels by the likes of Stephen King or Dean Koontz, or the Grimm brothers for that matter, there is something about being scared that people really seem to enjoy a lot.
Of course when it comes to films, the genre is wide and diverse, with horrors ranging from the wacky and silly, to gory blood feasts, to psychological thrillers and so much more.
It is almost impossible to compare horror movies, especially those on different sides of the scary spectrum. A movie like Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds is so different to something like A Nightmare on Elm Street, except for the fact that they will both give you goosebumps. The five movies below though are a good broad selection of classic horror that everyone who loves the genre should see.
The first I have just mentioned, Psycho, perhaps the most eerie of all Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces. Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates is absolutely brilliant, and to this day, this classic piece of cinema will scare almost everyone. It is nerve-wracking and the tension is unbearable throughout, and while it may not be as scandalous as it was in 1960, it remains one the iconic horror movies of all time. Who will ever forget that shower scene.
In 1973 The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin and starring Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow and Linda Blair, hit the screens and scared the world like never before. This was the movie that caused many sleepless nights for its audience, as the scary story of a young girl, played by Blair, is possessed by a demon, and we follow the story of the priests who try to exorcise the demon out of her. It is still as disturbing today, and should not be watched alone, unless you are very brave.
The next classic in this list of horror movies was directed by Hollywood royalty. Jaws, from the one and only Steven Spielberg, remains a leader in its sub-genre. It is the movie that stopped millions of people from swimming carefree in the sea, and humming the theme music at the beach is enough to stop quite a few people from even dipping the toes in the water.
When it comes to slasher horror movies, there are many to consider for the top spot, with Friday theThirteenth’s Jason and Elm Street’s Freddie Kruger close contenders. But it is Michael Myers in the 1978 original Halloween that tops the list. Perhaps it was Jamie Lee Curtis’ scream, or Donald Pleasance’s creepy psychiatrist, or the fact that it was directed by a true master of suspense, the one and only John Carpenter. Carpenter’s The Thing and The Fog are two other great scary choices.
Another Steven Spielberg film finishes the list, though this time he was only credited as the producer, though he did cast the movie, direct the actors and do all the storyboards. Toby Hooper was the director though of the classic ghost story, Poltergeist. Starring Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, this 1982 classic story of a family home haunting remains one of the best ghost horror movies ever made.

Astronomy – An Introduction
Although astronomy is the oldest science, it is still at the forefront of not only scientific thought, but also that of the public at large. Who hasn’t looked up at the stars while walking home late at night and wondered? Having said that though, the ancient people of definitely the northern hemisphere, but probably both hemispheres, knew the movements of the stars and planets more profoundly than most of us do nowadays.
They understood then, thousands of years ago, that the majority of stars appear to rise in the Eastern skies at night and travel on circular paths. They also noticed that some ‘stars’ were ‘wanderers’ (we call them planets) and that sometimes they went ‘against the flow’.
They also named groups of stars that we now call constellations or even galaxies and knew that those visible in the winter were different from those seen in the summer.and that others were visible all year round. The average common man of 5,000 – 10,000 years ago almost certainly knew more about the movement of the heavenly bodies than the average common man of today does. (I mean men and women here, of course).
They discovered how to work out or at least locate the extremities of the sunrise and went to extraordinary lengths to mark those points with huge stone structures, such as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, probably to facilitate the location of certain positions of the sun or other planets or stars, which may have been vital to their religious beliefs or crop cycles.
In 1609, Galileo invented the first artificial device for studying the stars and planets. It was the first astronomical telescope and through it he was able to observe things millions of miles away that no one had ever seen before. Because of the deductions he drew from his observations, he clashed with the Roman Catholic Church and was often in serious danger for his life, so radical were his discoveries.
But humankind was not to be put off, and since then we have gone on to construct ever bigger and ever better astronomical telescopes through which we can even detect radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, infrared waves and gamma waves from outer space. Forty years ago, we even travelled to our Moon. and we have sent rockets to eight of the nine planets in our Solar System, as well as to quite a few comets and asteroids.
Where will we go next? That decision was always up to the government of the United States and the old USSR, but now there are other players in the field. What will China or India want to explore with their possibly slightly different outlook on life? Or will it be only a question of financial benefit?
The world may be in a state of change and power may be shifting from its traditional seats, but it has not diminished interest in questions that scientists think can only be answered in space. These are exciting times in the science of astronomy, but then man has always found astronomy enthralling .

The Downside of the Cartel in Education in the U.S.
American civilization is currently under threat. Unfortunately, the danger is not as obvious as one would think, as in the case of terrorism. The greater menace is really the lowering standards provided by the public school education, which can be attributed to the education cartel. The effects have far-reaching consequences and in fact cannot be easily quantified.
This has been a long-standing issue that is recognized by most parents, even simple observers, as well as public officials. The deteriorating test scores in both math and reading, the corruption that is pervasive, and the retention of undeserving teachers and staff are all hallmarks that the public school system is going downhill. Very soon, the country will be faced with an ill-prepared workforce. This does not bode well for the economy.
As earlier mentioned, one of the dilemma brought about by the education cartel is tenure for the schoolteachers and staff. They are able to enjoy security regardless of their poor performance, which is mostly quantified by the performance of their students. Thus, there are lesser incentives for the schools to improve themselves.
This situation is not helped by the fact that the education cartel seem to be more intent on gaining more power than in looking out for the interests of the students. This struggle for greater power is highlighted in the recent veto by the Governor in Florida, Charlie Crist, a Senate candidate, of the bill that would tie teachers’ compensation with performance.
In fact, the education cartel plays a major part in making it very difficult to fire teachers, even for cause. It is no wonder then that the decision to dismiss all teachers and staff of the underperforming high school in Central Falls, R.I. While this may seem harsh, it serves as a wake-up call to everyone that there is something that can be done to address the lowering standards of the public education system.
It is quite disheartening, however, when criticism of the current state of the public school system is construed as hatred in the system itself. This is not so. The truth is teachers and staffs that perform well are still being accorded recognition. One such teacher is Beverly Jones. She exposed the dishonesty that was rampant in Trenton, involving payment of salaries to ghost employees as well as promotion of the repeaters’ program, at the cost of holding back students. This is just one of the facets of the fraud present in the system.
The truth is that there is a need to address the problem. There are alternatives provided – such as voucher schools and charter schools. While the advantages of adopting them are not yet clear, it is essential to come up with many alternatives as possible to prevent the education cartel from continuously wielding its power to the detriment of the students.
It is believed that by providing competition for the current public school system, the cartel in education would be forced to level up in terms of performance, which in the end would benefit the students.
