AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Review, Plus A Few Zombie T-Shirts

I’m not going to tolerate being labeled a “hipster” here, but it’s totally true when I say that I have been into zombies since way before they were cool. In fact, I was into Romero zombies when it was getting me made fun of in school. That’s alright, because I’m still a zombie t-shirts-wearing freak to this day. Now that the new season of “The Walking Dead” has started, I see that there are tons of fans out there who are storming the gates in excitement for zombies. I couldn’t be happier, to be honest. “The Walking Dead” deserves each and every squeal of excitement it gets.

The comic book was originally created by a master wordsmith by the name of Robert Kirkman. His talents are so good, that he’s actually responsible for bringing the Image publishing company back from the brink of death with his contributions. It’s someone funny that it took the undead to breathe life back into Image. When working on the show, Kirkman has remained fully involved in the creation process. He’s joined by Frank Darabont of “The Shawshank Redemption” acclaim, who is known for creating film full of very deep characters. One of my favorite zombie t-shirts features these two awesome individuals drawn as zombies.

The acting crew behind this show has done an outstanding job so far. Andrew Lincoln heads a stellar cast in the role of Rick Grimes, a police officer who has woken up from a coma in the worst possible scenario you can imagine: a world of zombies. He does a wonderful job as Rick, who’s signature fault is taking on the responsibility of leading and caring for a large group of survivors. You can see each death striking him as a deeply-felt wound. The boy who plays his son, Carl, is a young man by the name of Chandler Riggs and is doing a magnificent job dealing with very hard issues for someone so young. I love these characters so much, that I have several zombie t-shirts that feature them from the comic.

One of the arguably best things they’ve done in this series is deviate strongly from the original story featured in Kirkman’s comic. Some people rant and rave against not staying true to the original story, but I do not agree. Frankly, there are many scenes that would work well on paper but would not translate quite so well onto film. Changing the story up, introducing new characters, and keeping some alive while killing others makes the story new to me. They never even went to the Center For Disease control in the comic, but it was heavily featured in the first season of the show. None of that is going to stop me from buy “Walking Dead” zombie t-shirts and other merchandise.

With the second season just starting with an absolutely amazing hour-and-a-half premier, I can only say that I am getting more and more excited. The story seems to be even richer this season now that we’ve started really caring for the characters. I’m not here to spoil anything, but you absolutely have to watch this show! It is turning out to be one of the best shows on television, and the epic scale of it cannot be matched in any other show. I was watching the new season starter with all of the excitement of a kid at Christmas and all the anxiety of that same kid in the dentist waiting room…and you can bet your socks that I was wearing my season one zombie t-shirts while I did it.

Beats By Dr. Dre Earbuds, A Detailed Review

When I first came across these Dre Tour Earbuds I saw the 299$ dollar price and was put off right away. However, my inner impulsive buyer kicked in and I bought them despite that. The following is my more than personal review of this fancy device. Ironically, my first impression of the packaging was more like, “Wow I just spent an extra 30 on a box” than “These are so well protected!”. Though I suppose this isn’t a review of a box, so I’ll get over my gripe. These earbuds came with multiple ear pieces that change the sound and outside noise canceling properties.

In the box is a tool for changing the ear pieces, a removable cable attached pocket clip and a nice little carrying case that’s more useful than you would think. The carrying case is nice… its a hard composite material that has a stretchy pocket to put spare ear pieces inside if you ever feel like changing or god forbid that you lose one. The individual ear pieces surprised me however, each of them really do change the dynamics of the audio. While some enhance treble, some bring out the mid-range, then others enhance bass, but there’s only one in-particular that did all of the above the right way.

Let’s talk about the flat pasta looking cables, the bright red obviously stands out much more than the typical ipod white, and of course the fact that they’re flat makes them Very COOL. Believe it or not, this actually has a purpose, Monster (the company) found that making the cables flat made them resistant to tangling as they would if they were bunched into a pocket. In an attempt to see if this was true I ended up tying a knot in the cable, it wasn’t tight, but they weren’t tangled at any point so they are tangle proof just not knot-proof.

Aside from this, the cable is a nice length you can manage, just shy of four feet, giving you an optimal length between your pocket and head. The tours also have a nice little cable slide that presses the two earbuds together at the end for easier storage. I found the pocket clip to be actually more of an annoyance than an aid, so I was never able to use the earphones with it attached but the most important part of these earphones is undoubtedly the audio quality which is superb and what you’d expect for a pair of Dre Beats Ferrari Limited Edition at the $100+ price range.

The bass is present but not overwhelming, the mids are clear and powerful, and the highs are probably enough to make you go temporarily deaf. I CANNOT recommend you crank the volume past reasonable levels on your iPod or Zune or whatever you’re using with these little masterpieces of techno innovation, as they will destroy your hearing. Rap and hip hop is VERY well done, clearly the genre in which these were designed around; Dr. Dre of course, having a Ph.D in Beat-ology. ;)

Guitar Instructional DVD: Become A Pro Learning With The Pros

Like you probably have done, I have read a ton of interviews with great players and articles written by many of these same players. I often found it frustrating whenever the subject of learning to play guitar came up or when advice was offered on improving one\’s playing. With a small number of exceptions, very little time and space was offered on this.

Its not uncommon to see the player\’s advice be summed up in a grand total of three words: Practice! Practice!! Practice!!! Well of course we all know that practicing is the main ingredient. But rarely are we told much more than that. In my long quest to become an excellent player and to help my students do the same I carefully took note of what worked and what didn\’t. What parts conventional wisdom is accurate and what parts are (at least in my opinion) are not. I believe the twenty concepts that have proven to bring great results to those who use them are:

But no matter how good you get, there will always be something you can learn from someone else. Seek out those people, get to know them, jam with them, discuss music and guitar with them. Be willing to give as much (or more) as you want to take. If you are fortunate enough to be above the level of other guitarists in your area, seek out great bassists, pianists, violinists, drummers, etc. You can learn from them as well. (Even if you are not better than your guitar player friends, seek out musicians that play other instruments as well anyway).

You may need to revise certain aspects of your strategy as time goes on and that\’s ok, but don\’t try to go forward without one if you want the maximum results in the shortest amount of time. In my early days learning to play guitar, I wasted a lot of time aimlessly desiring to get better without having a clue as to how to plan for it. Sure I practiced a lot, but without direction and without an efficient path to follow. Most of my substantial progress as a musician came only after I developed a strategy and worked with it.

The way you view yourself (as an artist and not merely someone who owns a guitar and plays it sometimes) is very important to the way you will think about what you are doing musically. The way you see yourself will also effect the results you will get as you are expressing yourself.

Now that we have the proper attitude in focus, let\’s talk about how to go about \”managing\” the process of changing bad playing habits. How do we actually conduct ourselves, and our practicing and playing? As I have said, some people become paralyzed, afraid to play, afraid of undoing work done in practice sessions by what they do when they play. And for those who play professionally, it is of course, absolutely necessary that they continue to play, even if they are doing \”remedial\” work on their technique.

What I didn\’t know was that even though I was learning to keep up with these chord changes, I had so much muscle tension in my arms and other parts of my body, that I was locking in tensions that didn\’t have to be there, and would come back to haunt me a few years later as I attempted the classical repertoire, where you don\’t really get away with things like that. As the years went by, and especially in teaching others, I realized that it doesn\’t have to be that way for anybody! There is a way of going about it that doesn\’t create or allow this situation.

For instance, practice chord changes. Perhaps switching from an F barre chord to a D open is driving you crazy. Spend ten minutes going over and over the change.
