Watchmen – You Must See This Upsetting Picture

Movies about comic book style heroes have been around as long as they’ve been making movies. Superman, Spiderman, and Batman are some classics that have entertained millions of people around the world. These movies all have one thing in common. The good guys are clearly good, and the bad gu

ys are clearly bad. But what happens when you blur the line between good and bad in a superhero? The result is a movie called “Watchmen.” Based on the highly acclaimed graphic novel, this movie introduces the idea of what happens when real people struggle with real human emotions as super heroes.

Our story follows a parallel world, apparently close to our own. Some things are as you would expect different, we see Nixon captivating three terms as a president, and we see the United States undoubtedly winning the Vietnam Conflict, instead of slinking away in defeat. Our legend follows the path of this gang of heroes since the late fifties, in what started out as a vigilante society. The story jumps around throughout time, and has a attractive yarn to tell.

Somewhere along the line, our mob of fantastic heroes was deemed against the law, and one by one they have either been arrested, or murdered. A while has past without any activity from them, until one by one they start ending up being murdered. One of their associate decides to take it upon himself to reveal the rationale behind the killings. And in doing so he must feel the other members of the now redundant crew of protectors of humanity.

Throughout these flashbacks, we find out that these heroes are far from the unblemished image we are used to in our caped crusaders. Some of them are out-and-out cruel, and they even question the power that they hold over others. We discover that these so called super heroes have participated in murder, rape, and conspiracy to do countless crimes. But do they have a adequate rationale for all of this?

As a backdrop to this account is the increasing threat of nuclear conflict. That much is just as destructive to the film world as it is in real life. And the upsetting ploy behind the murders is something we don’t understand until the actual end of the picture. Something that makes us question the old maxim of the ends mitigating the means. Is it OK to kill one person to shelter a thousand? Is it reasonable to murder a thousand to protect one million?

These are some of the real life but needed questions our heroes must face. You may not agree with the decisions they construct, but the path they take along the way proves to be a tour de force of action filled tale telling. If you haven’t seen “Watchmen,” we exceedingly advocate it, as once you do, you will never think of a superhero in the same way.
